“XOXO Gossip Girl”. This infamous line is uttered each time an episode ends by the anonymous narrator of the hit TV series, Gossip Girl. Anyway, this post won’t be one of those fan blurbs instead this will plainly be about gossip. Yes, good old chismis.
Filipinos are quite fond of chismis which is why talk shows like “The Buzz” and “Entertainment Live” have such high ratings. People are generally interested about what’s the latest happening in the showbiz industry both local and international. Normal people, such as myself, would want a sneak peak of the glamorous life of the celebrities. Often, we would want to know about their flaw apart from their god and goddess like physic and status – so that we can feel good about our normal meandering lives (**evil grin**). Other than that we are just plainly interested of the their almost surreal lifestyle since these celebrities we have come to know have also become quite important to us (the degree varies).
Most individuals, especially women, often enjoy being “social aware”. We pass stories among friends and families that we can fondly relate to. Apparently, loving to gossip is not something that we should be ashamed of nor should it be something that we yearly add to our new year’s resolution as part of the habits we want to get rid. To gossip is our human nature. It is something we can’t avoid since it is embedded in the core of our psyche.
Other than we are just being human, gossip need not be all that bad since evidently a session of gossip can promote bonding. We need something to talk about so why not talk about someone who’s not here!
Please check out the article on the Science of Gossip. It’s pretty interesting. If you have thoughts that you want to share – express it here.
